If you’re looking for affordable home improvement, installing or changing the tile in your home can create a dramatic change. From modern options that feature tiles with unique colors and elaborate textures, to classic and elegant designs with tiles like limestone and marble, you can enrich your home’s appearance in bold ways with a moderate cost and effort.
Tile can be installed on many different surfaces around your home, including floors, backsplashes, and custom showers. When considering using your tile as part of your home improvement, keep in mind the use of the room and the different environmental factors to which the tile and its grout may be exposed. Tiles come in grades, and floor tiles that are walked on require a higher grade tile (a harder tile) than tile that is to be installed on as wall. Grout that is exposed to spills, as in a kitchen setting, should be a medium to darker shade and all grout should be sealed after it has cured to prevent staining and dirt penetration.
The foundation of your home is vitally important to the final outcome of your house. So too is the “foundation” of your tile project. All subfloors should be screwed down and then appropriate backer board should be installed properly on the floors or walls as a surface on which to glue the tile. With an appropriate foundation, your tile floor will never crack or suffer loose grout.
Also, don’t forget the size of the tile. Replace those old 4” x 4” tiles with a larger tile; larger tiles are now being used in even small bathrooms. You don’t need to spend a fortune on tile; a simple base tile dressed up with a border of glass tile can make your bathroom look rich and luxurious. Maybe you want to go retro and use subway tiles, the choices are endless.
