Drywall Types & Repairs

Repairing or replacing drywall is one of the most common services homeowners need. Drywall, also known as gypsum board or sheetrock, is very frequently damaged by mold, fires, and floods, and sometimes by someone stepping through a ceiling, so it is not rare to require some drywall repair every once in a while. Remember, if there are signs of water damage on your drywall, it is necessary to correct the source of the damage before beginning your drywall service, so that it does not get ruined by a continuing leak.

Keep the different types of drywall in mind when undertaking drywall service and repair.  Standard, or white drywall, is 1/2″ thick and is the most basic type and can be used for many of your repair and remodeling needs with the exceptions that follow.  For those areas of your home that present fire hazards, such as furnace or utility rooms, use fire resistant drywall which is thicker than standard drywall as it is 5/8” thick. This type of drywall contains glass fibers and non-combustible materials that prevent wall disintegration and the spread of fires. Blue and green board drywalls control moisture absorption and are commonly used for rooms with higher moisture areas, such as bathrooms and basements. Both fire resistant and blue and green boards are installed in the same manner as standard drywall. Finally, there are specialty sound absorbing drywall that mitigates sound transmission.
